While most people know what liposuction is, do they know the different kinds available? This is a popular procedure which many people undergo to reduce their size and shift stubborn weight. This treatment can transform lives and revitalise a client’s self-image, giving them a whole new level of confidence, leaving them free to dress and present themselves in ways they may never have believed possible.

So, what are the various types available, and how do they work? Standard liposuction is performed by inserting a hollow metallic tube (generally referred to as a cannula) through an incision in the skin, and the fat is then removed through this via suction. Whilst the procedure has been around since the 1970s, in the past ten years or so techniques have taken great leaps. New procedures, such as Vaser and Smart Lipo, offer clients more diverse methods to help them achieve the results they want.

What is Vaser Lipo?

Vaser Lipo is a newer invention which allows clients to receive the benefits of liposuction in a less-invasive way. Vaser Lipo uses the gentle power of ultrasound to target only the areas of fat which are to be removed, such as the upper and lower abdomen, the thighs, lower back and chest—all problem areas for many people unhappy with their weight. While ultrasound is most commonly used to scan babies’ progress in the womb, this can now help remove fat by emulsifying the fatty deposits, providing very little impact on the rest of the tissue, which can help to create a faster and more comfortable recovery.

What is Smart Lipo?

In this procedure, a cannula—containing a fibre optic cable—is slipped inside the skin, and then guided through the specific area of treatment by the surgeon. Following this, in order to perform the treatment, laser energy is delivered through the optic fibre, which then melts the fat cells—they are then broken down and suctioned, leaving other healthy cells surrounding them intact.

Smart Lipo also stimulates collagen production in the skin, helping it to tighten and tone from the inside-out, which may leave the skin smoother and firmer.

Who Should Consider Liposuction?

For people who cannot shift troublesome fatty deposits through a healthy diet and exercise, liposuction—be it traditional, Vaser or Smart Lipo—may solve the problem. Before undergoing the procedure, a client will meet with their surgeon and discuss their lifestyle, their current health and their expectations to ensure they meet the physical and psychological criteria for receiving the treatment. There are plastic surgeons in London offering free, no-obligation consultations.
